further proof that postsecret is one of the most inspired projects ever implemented

now there are people who wear white hats to the movies.

i love to be reminded that the internet can inspire us to connect with each other in such unexpected and simple ways.

A very cool idea. I wonder how long and if it can reach a critical mass. I suppose the bigger rock here is the act of wearing the hat and getting out into the world, open to a connection. Most of the stories on that blog seem to be about that process of deciding to wear a hat and not so much actual connections made. It just seems like the only places this could work would be city theatres where the odds of singles who might know about it would be higher.

The only movies I watch alone these days are from my DVD collection, when Amy is out of town. The movie outings are so rare, because of $$$ and kids, it seems a shame to waste it going by myself. I went to movies a lot in high school, but it was always predicated on having someone else go, too. I went to a movie by myself only once before; I can appreciate the awkwardness of it. If nothing else, maybe it will be part of the movie-going routine to linger a little and look for White Hats.

I went to the movies by myself for the first time when you were a little girl in Lincoln. I went to see a Goldie Hawn comedy. I remember very well the feeling that I was stepping out of a box that I hadn’t fully realized I was in. And now you are travelling by yourself on other continents!

It also shows how the internet can rob a novelty of its soul; large groups of people going to the movies en masse wearing white hats.

I was surprised at the weirdness of going to the cinema alone the first and only time I went by myself. It’s like eating alone in public. An inherited fear from when being estranged from the herd meant becoming lion bait. Or worrying the other animals will think you’re a dateless loser.
