Decision 2

so the plane ticket problem, she was perplexing me.

the first time i looked for tickets, i determined that the best deals were to be had flying JFK->Dublin->Edinburgh on Aer Lingus, and since i had been hoping to get to new york anyway before i left, that suited me just fine.

so when was i going to go out there? if i wanted to see erik while he was in new hampshire it was going to have to be soon. so then would i just kill a lot of time in The CityTM? and was i going to take my stuff to colorado and fly out there from denver? or was i going to store my stuff in bloomington (including selling or figuring out what to do with the car) and fly from indy? if i didn’t go to colorado, how would i see my mom before i go to put her mind at ease with this idea that i’m not sure when i’m coming back?

these were the questions that were vexing me this past weekend.

i have a solution now, though.

ready?

Decision 2: Orlando, FL -> Glasgow, Scotland; Thursday, 10 August, 2006.

pretty crazy, huh? :)

see, as i was poking around trying to find cheaper fares, i saw an ad for an Aer Lingus summer sale which said you could get from new york to dublin for $277. now, i had already established that one can fly from dublin to edinburgh for like $30, so this seemed like a very interesting sale. as with all airline sales, however, this fare is probably only good if you fly between 00:01 and 00:01:01 on the day between Sunday and Monday (it’s like Harry Potter and platform 9 3/4 – you just confidently click on the line between the two days and believe in magic), so all of the fares i found on the sale site were much, much higher.

this made me pissy at aer lingus, so i says to myself, i says: “i wonder if scotland has a discount airline?”

and by “i says to myself, i says” i of course mean “i asked google”

Screenshot of a Google search I did that pointed me to flyglobespan.com

turns out that this airline has three north american routes:

  • toronto <-> manchester
  • newark <-> liverpool
  • orlando <-> glasgow

it also turns out that my mother is moving to florida next month to begin an interim ministry position in palm beach, and that she wouldn’t mind keeping the car for me, and would love to take me to the airport in exchange for the chance to see me before i go.

and since the whole of the UK is smaller than oregon, and i plan to be rather portable, i do not anticipate having a hard time figuring out how to get between glasgow and edinburgh before sunday evening, when my convivio housing will begin.  i already know there are busses, see?

so the plan now is to pack up and store my stuff this week and next week, leave by next weekend at the latest, meet up with erik for the tailend of the new hampshire retreat, and then work my way down the eastern seaboard in one last hurrah of an american road trip.

pretty sweet, eh?

except for that “pack up and store my stuff” part.

egads.
