decision 1
so the friday before i left for bonnaroo, erik the elder sends out a link to this summer program in edinburgh, with a note saying:
Dear HCI students
Here is an interesting opportunity for abroad studies for a couple of
weeks. The application deadline is reaaly closing in though!! This
format is exciting and interesting and the instructors are wellknown
and experienced!Erik
i followed the link and was somewhat intrigued, though the website looked alarmingly like someone had thrown it up in an hour and a half by just cutting and pasting a bunch of stuff from seventeen different sources, and then making it all orange.
i wasn’t quite sure how to interpret the implications of that for the quality of the interaction design program that was being promoted, but i was distracted from thinking about it too much by the discovery that the application form had been done in a similar slapdash style, meaning that it was a page long, asked for a 100 word statement of intention, and required no recommendations.
this made the fact that it was due the next day much less intimidating, and so my “what the hell!” reflex was triggered, and i filled it out and then promptly forgot about it.
such was my surprise when, a week and a half later, i found an acceptance notice in my inbox, and i was therefore compelled to actually think about whether i want to begin shaping my nebulous travel plans around two weeks in scotland.
the deadline to confirm was yesterday, and i have been busy all week with the annual report at work, so i haven’t been able to think about it as much as i would have liked.
but i thought about it enough to say yes.
so there ya go.
travel decision 1: edinburgh, scotland - august 13th - 26th.
more decisions are forthcoming, and some of them rapidly, as i must buy my plane tickets soon, and to do so i must answer questions like:
will i go to colorado at all before leaving?
how long will i stay in new york on the way out?
will i be able to time it so i can hang out with erik in some northeasterly location for some period of time?
will i leave early and spend a week or so in dublin?
and all of that is just a prelude to the biggie, which is:
how long will i stay in europe?
my temptation is to answer:
as long as i frickin’ can.
but i don’t yet know what that means as far as logistics are concerned.
so i’ll write more as i know more, but for now let me just say:
holy crap! i thought i was taking a road trip!
