there isn’t enough about candy on this blog

more and more, i am enjoying this candy blog that i found one day not that long ago.
the author is a playwright in LA, and she writes a lot, and she likes candy, so she started reviewing candy on her blog, and now people send her things for free so that she can taste them and, hopefully, talk nice.
like she tried some gourmet marshmallows recently, and now i’m seriously tempted to order some, because how often do you get to taste a gourmet marshmallow?!
it’s like tech crunch for candy, and i think it’s wicked cool.

so i’m not saying that i’m trying to secure such a deal for myself, but seeing as i think about candy a lot, and i write a lot, and i’m trying to blog about more of what i think, well…
it strikes me as strange that i never really write about candy.

so speaking of things about sahara mart that continue to delight me (see previous post), i also picked up a chocolate bar that i hadn’t seen before. it is one of the dagoba bars, which are yuppie and expensive, and whose packaging includes greek translations and references to the alchemy of chocolate. i don’t buy them very much, partly because they cost too much and partly because they make me roll my eyes, but my adventurous confectionery spirit is still drawn to them from time to time, if only because it likes to decide if such things could possibly be worth all the fuss.
dagoba bars come in a range of interesting flavors, mostly of the fruit, nut and floral varieties. flowers and candy are friends from way back (even if they have been giving each other the cold shoulder a bit recently), so i like that dagoba really seems to be exploring that region of the palate, but the one that drew me this time was a fruit offering. it is “lime” – 59% dark chocolate, lime, and macadamia nuts. i gave a little piece to matt henry last night after the contra dance, and he doesn’t like it at all, but i think it’s quite pleasant. i like citrus-y chocolate (like chocolate oranges), and i don’t think that the lime is overpowering in this case, though matt and this guy beg to differ. i do agree with that review there about the dearth of macadamia nuts however. there are perhaps two, split into tiny pieces and scattered throughout, and i’m not even sure that i noticed them.
i probably won’t buy the bar again for a long time unless i’m giving it to someone because it comes up in conversation, but i am still glad that i tried it, and i bet i’ll be able to nibble my way through it without much of a struggle. :)
it’s not as good as the xocolatl bar, which is darker, with chiles and cacao nibs in it, but seeing as i actually consider that bar to be worth the price once in a while, and not just for adventure’s sake, that’s a tall order.
that reminds me that i noticed, while shopping for coffee, that sahara mart has some xocolatl Drinking chocolate, and it tempts me. even though it is almost summer and it costs ten freaking dollars.
yeesh.

so there you go.
some thoughts on candy.
next time i’ll write about something much less hoity-toity.
like possibly how i am saddened that sweeTarts doesn’t make special easter candies shaped like bunnies and chicks anymore, because i used to love those things, and there was a White one, which otherwise didn’t exist.
and that will probably lead to the story about how my mom and i pretty much boycott sweeTarts since they changed the recipe a few years ago, and people think we’re crazy because they say that they didn’t change anything…
but those are depths that we shall not plumb for now.
;)

You should make a trip to Saraga over by Kroger if you want to try something a little different candy-wise. It’s hard to go wrong with Pocky or Gummies (apple tends to be a good one, though one of the mixed bags might be better to start if you haven’t had them).

Which reminds me… I should try to pick up some snacks from one of the larger Asian grocery stores here before I head back to Bloomington. Maybe I’ll even bring something in to Eignemann…
