morning report

yesterday josh slapped me on the wrist for sleeping in on saturday, and kevin graciously offered to lend me his children (aged 4 and 2, i believe?) between the hours of 6 and 9 every morning, as personal coaches in the art of rising early and diving right into the world.
such thoughtfulness (and confirmation that people are reading my posts even when i ramble and take breaks), was heartwarming, and i thank you all for it.
it also makes me more compelled to keep up with short little updates, so here you go:

Sunday: i woke up at 8:30, just enough to turn on the radio. this is an old strategy that i have experimented with from time to time, with varying effect. i have found that i am quite capable of sleeping through the news, and i did probably doze off a bit yesterday, i admit. but i was awake for the puzzle at 9, heard several of the stories in the next hour, and was up and about during this american life at 10. this american life is a marvel when it comes to both keeping my attention and making me want to be a part of the waking world, and i found myself thinking: if only it were on Every morning, and i could wake up to it instead of morning edition. then i thought: well, it’s online, so it Could be on every morning. to which i countered: yeah, but that takes effort, you should record it ahead of time… if only it was already recorded….
and this was a funny train of thought for part of my brain to be having, because another part was already chiming in with: “umm…. it Is already recorded, dumbass.” because i happen to know that david already embarked upon a moderate-term project to record this american life every week, so he has hours and hours of old episodes on dvd, and has offered to lend them to me for drives and such several times.
having both the thought that i really wish it were simple to try listening to TAL every morning, AND the realization that it is actually even simpler than i could hope… this makes me unable to resist trying it out. so that’s for later in the week. i’ll let you know.

Monday: today i awoke with something of a start at 8:47. tiffanie and i were supposed to go the gym at 9, so i pulled myself out of bed to find my workout clothes and such. this confirms that the real challenge is just that initial act of dragging myself up and out. once i was walking around i had fun being up: i drank some juice, made a piece of toast, read some articles in reason and interactions, called tiffanie to see where she was, made a cup of coffee because she didn’t answer, read some more, worked on capstone stuff, enjoyed my coffee, and dealt with email.

a good way to start the week, i’d say.

on we go.
